If you're interested in true IR photography, you'll need to use a camera that has the IR blocking filter (part of the sensor stack) removed. Without a modified camera, you'll be using long exposures, losing some of he IR light, and with a DSLR the viewfinder will be very dark with an IR filter mounted.

I’m aware of that, I’ve talked to people who only use IR filters, I’m not looking for any award winning images just something different to keep me busy during the summer so I don’t lose motivation like I did last year.

I don’t have the money to convert my camera to IR, and even if I did, I don’t have a spare body since I wouldn’t want to convert my main camera. That said, I think I’ll stick to my £17 Zomei IR filter I just bought 😅

I use that brand on my converted cameras for filtering out more visible light, they work fine. Using an IR filter on a non-converted camera is fine for testing the waters, but you will lose a good amound of the light you're trying to capture, and composing/focusing is often a pain - IR focus point is different than visible light, so if you focus first with the filter off then add it before exposure the focus will be off.

I tried just using external filters at first, but quickly switched to a modified camera (a Canon EOS M). Focusing is much better and I can take photos of moving objects due to the faster shutter speeds available (this includes leaves in landscapes).
