M6 Mark II Questions
1

Hi,

I am trying out a Canon M6 Mark II on a 24 Hour Test Drive program by Canon.

The reason I am interested in M6 II is

1) It is tiny. I do have an R6 but for an upcoming trip photography really isn't the focus so needed a very portable camera which may match my R6 for responsiveness. Had pre-ordered the R10-18-45 kit but my trip has moved forward enough that I am sure I won't get it before I leave for the holiday.

2) Getting access to the 32MP sensor + 15-45 Lens at R10 + 18-45 kit price.

So far, I think I feel I think it is definitely not frustrating like the EOS RP when compared to R6's performance. It is a snappy little camera.

The couple of questions I have,

1) Continuous burst + Servo + Face/Eye Tracking is only available with Mechanical Shutter. However, when I enable the RAW Burst mode, I can continue to use Electronic Shutter + Servo + Face/Eye Tracking. Other than reduction of resolution to 17MP + risk of rolling shutter ... is there any other disadvantage to doing that ? 17MP is plenty for this application for me personally. The advantage is that I can emulate ES + Tracking + Continuous Burst without worrying about Shutter Shock. (Emulate... because I don't really have all the frames from the burst... which in a way could be a blessing in disguise )

2) This one is not directly for M6 II but for kitting it out with EF-M 18-150 lens. The 15-45 that came in the kit, seems to be doing OK so far. A few shots I have taken which appear to have blur at 100% are easily fixed by masking them in Topaz. Granted that EF-M 18-150 will not solve the problem as well... but I have Focal Length FOMO. Any disadvantages of that lens other than I will need a bit more space to carry it ?

2a) Will it be better to get the 22mm f/2 instead ?

Other general observations so far for M6 II

- I can use my R6 in Auto ISO in wild abandon. M6 II definitely warrants a deliberate hand. I have found keeping it in Fv mode works best in terms of ergonomics/haptics.

- IQ is a known quantity and DxO and/or Topaz help bring out the best. With R6 I can go JPEG only but M6 II is definitely a RAW or RAW+JPEG camera.

- Both of the above are not a problem at all given that I have been able to fit M6 II + 15-45 kit in my track pant pocket ! It is TINY.

This is how I have customised it so far

- * Button : Single Shot / Servo Toggle

- Movie Rec Button : AF Mode Toggle. The default two-step process from the Focus Point selector is there as well but having a direct short cut works better.

- M-fn Button : RAW Burst Mode

- Shutter mode (ES/MS) registered in a Tactical My Menu tab

- Staying in Fv mode all the time.

Any other hints, tips I should look out for or test further ?

Thanks,
