I often use my X-T4 alongside a traditional DSLR with a PASM dial, and this is my take: the dials on the X-T4 are more enjoyable to use but they are not as efficient (for me) as having custom modes quickly available on a physical dial. I can set my DSLR to a numbered custom mode and know that all my settings are correct and ready to go, but with my X-T4 there's always a nagging question of whether I forgot to switch a setting, or whether one of the dials got accidentally moved. Enjoying the process is important to me, which is why I love shooting my X-T4. But if I was a working pro I would actually prefer the X-H2's ergonomics and would use the custom modes religiously.

I prefer the legacy controls vs PASAM as well yet every camera has some things that are super easy to do and things that are not as easy. This is why one needs time with a camera to find a setup that works for them. I like to simplify and find a few setups that I use for everything. For example on X-T series cameras I use the following approaches:

- Aperture or program mode using exposure compensation

- Manual exposure and I vary the ISO

For both I'm in zone AF unless I need very fine focus in which case I use single point of manual focus. I'm always in AF-C and high speed burst mechanical shutter.

This setup allows me to avoid having to change settings if action starts. Even for things like waterfalls I usually will shoot a small burst as things are always changing. Portraits of people, I capture multiple samples and there are always differences.

You're right, but for me it still comes down to trust. For example, if my DSLR's custom dial is set at U1, I know it's ready to shoot at my default settings. But when I pick up my X-T4, I have to go over a small checklist before I'm ready to shoot, because there are so many settings beyond aperture and shutter speed that might be off: ISO, white balance, drive mode, AF settings, etc. Being able to lock these into a custom mode give me a measure of security I can't get with traditional dials.

I always put my cameras away with a standard set of settings.  I've been doing this for nearly 20 years and this includes with Nikon bodies.  All I have to do is turn it on and I know what I have and if I want it different I know what to change.
