There's no ff lens in any current system that gives 450mm-equiv non-cropped images at the size and weight of Fuji's 70-300.
Yeah, that's where I kind of get stuck, too. I don't mind having a bigger lens at home for running outside for opportunistic wildlife photographs. But I really like the idea of a small, light kit I can travel around with and have up to 300mm APS-C equivalent. My Sigma 100-400 isn't all that big, but considerably bigger than the Fuji 70-300. If Nikon came out with a killer 70-300 lens for Z I could contemplate cropping but then I'd need a pricey Z7 II for the resolution and the lens would have to be very sharp to compete with the Fuji after cropping down to APS-C size.
Canon 100-400 RF f/5.6-8 IS?
You know, the funny thing is I decided to do a search after I made that post (and before I got back to this thread) ... I know Nikon and Sony have no equivalent, but I decided to take a look at Canon and stumbled across that lens. Reviews suggest it's cheaply made (no surprise) and optics can't match the more expensive, faster Canon lenses (no surprise) but it's interesting ... at the long end, it seems to have better corner to corner sharpness than the Fuji and I'd be primarily interested in such a lens for landscape/scenic use.
Not sure I could ever convince myself to move to Canon, but it's something I'll have to keep in mind.
But an example of compactness as a growing market segment for ILCs?
I think that's the biggest threat to what remains of the APS-C market - FF manufacturers who don't want to have to invest in a full APS-C lineup are making an effort to create FF equivalents to popular APS-C lenses ... smaller, slower, cheaper. (Biggest problem for me is the cheaper part - I love the look & feel of the Fuji gear I've tried, while Nikon's cheaper, smaller Z stuff feels lousy - plastic lens mounts anyone ? - and I have no idea about the Canon lens as of yet).
Edit: Hmmm maybe not quite there…

Not quite ... but close enough for me to think about it some more before I eventually ditch my DSLR for a long-term mirrorless kit.
Thanks!
