For both I'm in zone AF unless I need very fine focus in which case I use single point of manual focus. I'm always in AF-C and high speed burst mechanical shutter.

Did you ever try using electronic shutter with pre-shot? And what's the reason you do not find this good enough for the photos you make?

Hi Tim,

Electronic Shutter has a major issue, roiling shutter.  It will spoil many nice images.

If you understand your subject, it is easy to predict when action is about to happen.  For example, these are things that indicate a bird is about to fly:

- Turning into the wind

- Pooping

- Acting stressed

- Tensing up

- Changing tone of chirp

I don't miss many takeoffs because I'm not surprised by them.  Knowing the bird is about to fly and the direction it will go (into the wind) I'm able to provide room in the frame for the bird to move into.

If a bird is standing in the same spot for 30 minutes, dose one just hold down the shutter in preshoot hoping to capture something interesting?  I just photograph interesting behavior as I see it and watch for tell tail signs that the bird might fly.
