Z9 slow autofocus in studio

Today a first big shoot with the Z9 in studio. And it let me down.

The autofocus was all over the place, hunting, looking for an eye, and just not getting focus fast.

A few test i did previously in the nearly dark worked rather well, but in a studio setting it all came tumbling down.

So what's wrong, or what am I doing wrong?

AF-S, lots of hunting, slow to lock onto an eye and fire.

AF-C is better, it can follow the subject more or less, but stil not great.

I tried many modes of AF, box, all, 3D, all with human eye detect, but none worked great.

I even added some light to improve things, but those didn't help that much.

Subject was a single model on a white background, exposure setting M, S 1/160, F 11, Iso 100.

The D500 that i had as a backup was much better at getting focus.
