Re: Who would buy a Nikon Z (DX) a la D500?

I would! ... I am actually, now, excited about the prospect! (I call it “Z900” … but they can call it “Elmo” … I don’t really care)

From four years ago, until recently, I was strongly opposed to going to mirrorless. It was as much a full frame opposition, as it was a belief that a Z7 could not outperform the D500. I have since, come to a better understanding of the autofocus advantages of the most recent (Z9 and other brands) mirrorless AF technology … I.E. subject recognition and accuracy, and without the AF fine tune “mumbo jumbo” we’ve endured since the feature became available on the D3 & D300.

The pixel density issue, however, has continued to fuel my resistance.  Because they are Full Frame, even the Z7’s 45.7MP and the Z9 as well, actually fall short of the D500’s pixel density. If I am to purchase another camera, which will, perhaps, be my last, as I am also a Geezer, I’m interested … NO … insistent, on a reasonable upgrade in pixel density.

Sony, Fujifilm, and Canon, now have higher pixel density Pro Level APS-C Mirrorless cameras. I believe Nikon cannot ignore this for long, or they will risk losing a sizable chunk of would-be Z Pro DX buyers, most of which are current D500 users, as well as some D7xxx shooters.

The fact is, there are very good adapters for F-mount lenses to be used on some of the other brands, and I (and perhaps many other current F-Mount shooters), plan on using at least three of my current lenses on “Elmo”, which would require the Nikon FTZ adapter, anyway. For instance Fujifilm’s X-H2S, has 26MP and can be adapted to F-Mount lenses, using Fringer’s excellent adapter.

I would like to see closer to 30MP on “Elmo”, as the Canon R7 sports 33MP.

And, I am, somewhat, optimistic of it happening.

Just my 2¢
