It's not just aliasing -- the colour mosaics give the image a subtle general blur, which is only obvious when you compare directly with a Foveon image. The Foveon camera has a grip on the subject.

However, most photographers never see the difference; and Topaz Sharpen goes some way toward getting the same result. But Topaz can add artefacts when it's in a bad mood.

A few years ago I spent quite a bit of time comparing Foveon images with pixel-shift images from a Bayer sensor w/o an AA filter. (Pentax K-70) As you might expect, it's hard to do a fair comparison between two cameras, but I thought that the Pentax image - after sharpening with the discontinued piccure+ - was just as sharp as the Foveon.

In other words, I didn't see any "subtle general blur".

I may revisit that with Topaz sharpening, which keeps getting better and better.

First pass - pixel-shift with Topaz on right. Sigma DP3M on left.

The pixel-shift image is with a Pentax K-1, and the Pentax 100 mm macro lens. Both on tripod, 2 sec delay, ISO 200. Sigma, I was about 8' from the bookcase, Pentax about twice that. One immediate issue is that the light came from a window behind me, so unless I stood in exactly the same place, the glare was different.

It looks to me that the Sigma lens is better (this zoomed view is in the upper right of both images.) And it looks like Topaz went a little too far in sharpening.
