A few years ago I spent quite a bit of time comparing Foveon images with pixel-shift images from a Bayer sensor w/o an AA filter. (Pentax K-70) As you might expect, it's hard to do a fair comparison between two cameras, but I thought that the Pentax image - after sharpening with the discontinued piccure+ - was just as sharp as the Foveon.

In other words, I didn't see any "subtle general blur".

I may revisit that with Topaz sharpening, which keeps getting better and better.
