More like Kintsugi
7

I suspect the flaws are less deliberate and more technological limits that Sigma could not overcome at the time. But I do think the end result is not dissimilar.

Rather than Wabi Sabi, I think it's more like Kintsugi, where gold is used to highlight broken pottery. The cracks in Kintsugi were not originally deliberate and for most people, quite problematic. But looked at in the right light they are contributions to the overall beauty and functionality of an item.

The odd white balance, ISO limitations, relatively poor autofocus, Sigma Photo Pro, and so on are all things that what repel many photographers - yet they also draw others to Foveon products since the end result is quite unique. They force you to look at the world and how you will represent it in an entirely new way. Sort of like a slightly different medium - still digital yet quite different from the rest.

So I'd say it's like kintsugi since the limitations of a Foveon can be a flaw - or a feature - depending on how you choose to look.
