Re: Slow backup to WD My Passport 5TB drive

I've done some more testing. Looking at the figures below it seems that the larger the capacity of the drive, the slower the write speed. Or is it just that newer versions of WD portable drives are not as efficient?

My Passport 2TB (purchased May 2013) - average write speed 80+ MB/s

I borrowed my wife’s My Passport 3TB (purchased July 2017). Average write speed about 80 MB/s

WD My Passport Ultra 5TB (purchased May 2022) – average about 39 MB/s.

I've contacted WD by email. I don't really expect to get anywhere, but who knows.

I'll live with the situation for the time being but sooner or later I want to get something that writes faster. SSD would be ideal but too expensive for the capacity I'm looking for. Has anyone got any suggestions for higher capacity drives with good write speeds?

I have an Icy Box HDD docking and cloning station which I use for cloning 3.5" drives used for my server-based music system. I'm not sure, but maybe I could use this to backup to a 3.5" drive which I guess would be faster than the WD My Passport drive.
