According to Rudy Winston there is no grip for the R7.

Interesting though. I was just reading a post that asked if the grip was worth it for the R5 and most posters stated that it was not worth back in March '21, now that there's no grip for the R7, the opposite seems to be stated a year later. I don't know if it's the same posters though.

I don't think so. I've not run into any DSLR users that use, for example, both the 5D IV and 7D II. Not that they don't exist, but that would be an exception and not the rule.

I have both - I’m happy to be thought of as “exceptional”

BTW I had the 5DIII and then bought the 7DII so for me the APS-C was not a product gateway to FF

Just found that interesting. I think it's odd Canon did or will not produce a grip for the R7.

Clearly a lot of users think it's unusual. I may just keep using my 7D II alongside my R6 until it stops working and is not financially viable to repair or wait and see if there's an R7 II and what that might bring.

I’ve been using battery grips with all of my cameras Olympus DSLR, Olympus Mirrorless and Canon DSLRs

Before ordering the R7 I took the battery grip off my Olympus E-M1III and mounted the EF300mm f/2.8 IS II with the EF1.4x III (and Metabones adapter) just to see how it handled

The E-M1III body (sans grip) is about the same size as the R7 and the EF300/2.8 is the main Canon birding lens I use with my 7DII and, less often, the 5DIV

I found the camera awkward to use with my pinkie finger searching for a hold.

I also use hand straps with all my cameras (Olympus GS grip strap) - fixed between the camera’s RH strap lug and the strap loop on the base of the battery grip, and I really missed the security and comfort of the strap, so I fitted a Canon Hand Strap that can fix to the tripod mount.

After a couple of days I decided that I could live with the R7 ergonomics without a battery grip and placed an order.

In the absence of a battery grip I’ll be looking for a full-length base plate with an opening for the battery door. It just needs to be tall enough to give my pinkie finger something to grip and Ideally it will slightly curve around rather camera base plate to prevent rotation and it needs to have a loop for attachment of the grip strap.

RRS and others already have products for other R models so hopefully it won’t be long before we see something tailored for the R7.

I’ve had the R7 for almost a weeks now - configured and ready to go but the weather is poor, roads and parks closed with torrential rain and flooding
