insert Tern-related puns, here:

My Tern

Wrong Tern

Today has taken an unexpected tern

Tern Around, Bright Eyes....

etc etc.

I'd never seen a Tern so following a tip-off from a person on a local birding FB group I headed out to a beach I hadn't been to before, and I was not disappointed: I saw one within the first 5 minutes of being there. Unfortunately, I misjudged the tides and was battling against rapidly retreating waters, taking the birds further out to sea. Mental note for next time.

Anyhoo, new birds and new location, for me:

My first sighting of the red-beaked fellows (Common Terns, I think):

Bonaparte's Gull

The formation flying squad prepare for take-off, whilst the crowd looks on. Dave, at the back, is too easily distracted.

I think this is what you call a mouthful:

White-Crowned Sparrow with "friend".

I think this is a Semipalmated Sandpiper, but I could be wrong

THE BLOOPER REEL:

I also saw some Bald Eagles but here they have to go down as the ones that got away

By this time the sun was harsh, which was difficult for dark birds.

Here they were tussling over a dead gull (can be seen in the bottom right of the third photo) one of them had been chowing down on for a while

I'm also going to add the next one to the blooper reel: I love the "ballerina diva" pose, but it's not as sharp as I'd like:

Thanks for looking.
