Caspian Terns

During the summer you can always hear the rather unmelodious call of Caspian Terns in our neck of the woods. They also tend to hang out at the local Iona Beach Park. While this provides the potential for good photography opportunities, you have to time it right:

*  They frequent the western shore, so the light is really only good to get them relatively early in the morning.

*  The shore shelves very gradually, so when the tide is out, they go off way far away from the shore.

This morning was a good combination: high tide early in the morning. So I headed off in search of some Caspian Terns. Some of the shots I got:

I was surprised to see how many of them were sitting or flying around with fish in their beaks. Not sure why they did not just eat them and be done with it...

Another fish...

I think they are really extremely pretty

And if you have an itch, you have to scratch!

And I was fortunate enough to experience a choir practice!

Not ducks but Terns in a row!
