I purchased my new EF600 V2 late in its life cycle; the EF V3 was already out. I did so because it was much cheaper than the V3, the same The Digital Picture review noted the V2 was sharper with extenders than the V3, and realistically, either lens would see most of its use on a tripod, thus the V3's lower weight would not greatly benefit me.
Both lenses are nothing short of fantastic though the mk3 really is fantastic for hand-held photography. I totally appreciate the price difference but the weight difference is nothing to take lightly.
I didn't take the V3's weight lightly, but at 66 years of age, I didn't foresee even the lighter V3 getting much hand-held use. Either lens, EF 600mm V2 or V3 would be weightless on my Gitzo tripod with the Wimberly WH200 gimbal.
Definitely everyone has their own physical abilities. I do have one friend your age that does use her mk3 hand-held on a regular basis.
Whatever works for her is great. Thanks.
