D850 in Live View mode, flash on TTL, non-CPU lens: "err"

I was trying to take macro pictures with my D850 and the Laowa 60mm f/2.8 lens. The lens is fully manual (no electronics at all). With flash, I usually have my SB-800 flash on manual, at about 1/8 power, and everything works fine, either in Live View or normal mode.

Yesterday, I was curious to see if using the flash in TTL or TTL-BL modes would give good results. Things are OK if I shoot in normal mode (looking through the viewfinder), BUT if I switch to Live View, something weird happens. When I press the shutter button the flash fires but then...nothing. The LCD screen on top of the camera flashes the "err" message. The shutter button does not work, nor does the LV button. At this point, I have to turn off the camera (to get it off Live View). When I turn it back on, the "err" message is still on the LCD but at this point I can press the shutter button and the message disappears, everything goes back to normal.

I have repeated this several times with the same results. I tried this with CPU lenses and there is no problem there, flash works in TTL and TTL-BL in Live View.

Is there a reason why TTL does not work in Live View with a non-CPU lens?

It's not what your camera can do for you - it's what you can do with your camera.
