So it has to do with ring type USM? I own EF 28-105/3.5-4.5 USM from 1992, and indeed, it reports focus distance.
I don’t think it just the Ring Type USM lenses. I have highlighted in bold some non-USM lenses on that list. There are also a few Micro USM lenses on that list.
1999-2003 for the other lenses.
