I can see what the OP is getting at. That said the fascination with camera and software metrics does seem inversely proportional to photography on DPR. It’s possible we have reached a period in history of being over saturated with banal images (mine included) but somehow that’s ok because the latest camera is better than the last , or because it was shot on this that or the other format with a very sharp fast lens. 
I tend to agree with Jack, gear and PP is the least interesting aspect of photography but it is the easiest to talk about.
