It's not a camera issue, it's a lens issue.  The rear element of the 100-500 sits very far back in the body.  And I'm aware of it as I use the combination all the time with the R5.  I'm just stating that the limitation is more of an issue on the R7 for this kind of shooting because even pulling back to the 300mm mark, in a lot of cases it was still too much focal length and I couldn't back up anymore.
When using the RF 1.4x converter (or 2x for that matter) with the RF 100-400 lens, that limitation does not exist.
