Next Telephoto Lens to Purchase: 100-400 or 150-600?

*First time posting on dpreview forum!*

Hi! I’m a Canon M6 II user and photography is one of my hobbies! I typically take nautre/wildlife photos and outdoor sports (sports is mostly competitive swimming in sunny California). My current lenses are as follows:

EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 (Kit Lens)

EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM

EF 50mm f/1.8

I’m looking for something with more reach! I’ve been looking at the Sigma/Tamron 100-400, Sigma/Tamron 150-600, and the Canon 100-400. Cost is a factor! I’m a college student and the Canon is way over my budget but I wanted to throw it on the list anyway. I handhold all my photos since I don’t have a monopod or tripod.

I had a friend suggest the 70-200 2.8 and while it would be awesome to have that 2.8 throughout the entire zoom range, I already have a lens that covers that entire range (also the cost of the canon 70-200 is way up there).

So what’s the best option? I’d love to hear from you guys. Thanks a lot!
