I look at this survey result with interest mainly because it tells me how the forum members utilize their m system. The results suggest majority use the m with another presumably canon full frame ef or rf system, as enthusiasts or working pros.
I'm not sure about that. Many have posted that they could not vote. Either there was no option for them or the author had added some text they could not agree with (me included). So this is not a "fair" poll.
I myself am an enthusiast and have only used the m6ii along side my cell phone camera. My use case is to capture family and travel moments. I do have a couple of longer zooms for zoos and birds but they don't get as much use. So for me the m has been perfect for size and iq as well as being inconspicuous. The m system is tailor made for someone like me
+1
and this I suspect is their intended market but will probably keep shrinking with phones getting better and better.
I think they are about to reach a limit now or very soon. I can't see that a phone will ever be as good as an APS-C camera. And I think many will still want a "real camera" (being large or small) for the good feeling and experience. It could be a grip, an EVF, buttons and dials, interchangeable lenses, a tilt screen etc.
The way I see it, the problem with apsc as a format is that there is a dichotomy in use cases. For the m system, the use case is for small and light but not necessarily fast unless using small primes. The other use case for apsc is pixel density for long focal range wildlife and macro. This means attaching heavy long lenses that doesn't balance well with the m cameras. So for the new rf apsc cameras, they are designed with this use case in mind, with bigger grips etc. One use case requires a small body and the other requires a bigger body for balance.
I agree with most of that, but I don't actually see that as the problem.
I suspect rf apsc will only have slow apsc zooms as the intended use case is to attach the long focal length lenses. For everything else Canon will want you to get the rf full frames.
I think Canon make a big mistake if they let down all the people who want small, light and affordable cameras and lenses (and still very good IQ) and a mount that has the right size for an APS-C camera (= M-system) .
I would still hope Canon will still release new bodies for the m.
I think they will. (If not, I will call them stupid. )
There is still a place for fast reliable af to capture running kids but I suspect that will be down to demand. I don't think they'll release any more lenses for the m.
I hope you are wrong. And I also hope for more 3rd party lenses with af.
Very much agree with everything you’ve said. There’s still a spot for Small, Light, and Affordable in the Canon world.
