FYI - The original battery tabs were spot-welded on; possibly by Yaesu.

Did your battery replacement solve the problem?

I forgot the user reply that says you have to do a full reset to avoid the 'dead-CPU' syndrome. Found the reply again where I saved it, but other stuff happened since then that was more urgent, like completing our tax return.

I thought those batteries were only used to keep the clock running and retain the memories while the radio is un-powered...

You are correct. The original CPU battery lasted 20 years at least, so I am not complaining.

Those lithium metal batteries have a 10-12 year shelf life, so the thicker CR2032 will likely not get you anything beyond what a CR2016 would have with half its capacity.

Probably not, but my point is, there is a battery holder available for it that fits the Yaesu.

That CR20xx family is a very popular one for coin lithium metal cells. I have rifle scopes with lit reticles that use them, keyless entry car remotes, and even the Casio watches with advertised 10 year battery life use the thinner ones.

And they are still available 20 years later.

Sorry or the lateness of the reply. As I said - other stuff happened. Still, if I can get that FT-847 going again, I will have VHF, UHF and HF in the same set again.

Thanks for coming back to me.
