Re: Fujifilm Autofocus DOES NOT WORK properly

Hi,

I just looked at the two images with the yellow campervan. (It's late here in Oz). They're obviously different. The degree of focus on the van is similar (if you check out the ventilators on the side of the van). However, the background tree above the van is rendered very differently between the two images.... despite the same reported aperture.

The background tree in the first image is much more OOF. The tree in the second image is less OOF and closer to being in focus. The EXIF is saying they were both shot at f4. I don't know what happened and I don't know where the focus point was placed. The camera was moved slightly - the image centre differs a little between the two images - I don't know if that has a bearing on anything. It may not. However, the very different degree of focus in the backgrounds would suggest that the focusing distance was different. The result being that the van sits at a slightly different place within the DOF available at f4 in both photos, but the tree in the first image appears to be further outside the DOF than it is in the second image. Hence it's rendered softer. Making sense?

I don't own or use the X Pro cameras, I'm an XT person. Nevertheless I still don't use the distance scales in the EVF. I didn't find the scale accurate in my old XT1 when using the 18-55. It was better with primes.  The camera focused correctly - the AF and images were fine, but the distance reported in the EVF was not accurate. I haven't checked them on my XT4 - I just don't use them. I either rely on the AF, which I find absolutely fine, or focus manually by eye using the MF assists. My personal choice is magnification rather than split image or focus peaking, but that's subjective. Nor do I rely on the camera's indication of the DOF via the blue bar. In my experience DOF apps like DOF Master are better than the indicator in the camera.

I don't know if any of that helps. I hope you resolve what your camera is doing.....

Regards, Rod
