The 100-400 is heavy and bulky--too much to carry around your neck. It's fine in a backpack, but, I seldom want to stop to retrieve my camera from a backpack. I hike with the 50 or 20-60, depending on light conditions. Occasionally the 24-105, but that's pretty heavy as well.
