just bought a camera!

If you want an inexpensive telephoto zoom lens look for a Canon 55-250mm lens. I used that for a very long time before I got my Tamron 150-600mm lens. But I still use the Canon 55-250mm lens if I don't need more than 250mm FL and because it's very lightweight.
Thanks for the suggestion. I'm considering that one. What do you think about this lens? Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Telephoto Zoom Lens The downside is it has no image stabilization.

A good suggestion but make sure that you get the STM version of the 55-250

I would not recommend that lens. The newer EF 70-300 II NanoUSM is quite good for about $550 new.

I had that one more than a decade ago. Mostly useless for wildlife. Also, it took long to focus and requires higher ISO.

Congratulations,

I would suggest finding/joining your local camera or photography club. There you will find people with more experience and can offer help and answer questions. You might have questions about software for processing your pictures or learning different techniques. It's also a good place to meet people who are passionate about photography, have outings and maybe guest speakers or presentations. Enjoy yourself. Buying a camera is just the beginning.

From what I've read and heard on this forum and elsewhere, I would not recommend the Canon 75-300mm lens.

Good point! There should be a lot of good used Canon 55-250mm STM lenses available, if someone is trying to save money.

This author reviewed the 55-250mm and compared it to the 70-200 f/4 and the 70-300 f/4-5.6.

It didn't seem like he was too impressed, but he was also not reviewing the STM version of the 55-250.

The other two lenses are also somewhat higher in price.

Think I'll stick with the 55-250 STM.

He was not reviewing the newer version of the EF 70-300II NanoUSM, which is a better optic

Someone tried to give me one last year, just out of curiosity, I tried it. It is universally awful.

I got the Canon EOS Rebel T7. I needed a camera for my photography course and I wanted something affordable.
Ameliaz,

Congratulations.

Buy yourself a spare battery. You will need it.

Steve Thomas
For a Canon Rebel DSLR? How many thousands of pictures do you take in a day? We can use ours for days without recharging. It’s not a mirrorless.

I always like to have a spare battery. I'd hate to miss an opportunity. I never know when I would want to take video too. That video is pretty cool. The more video I take, the more I like it.

Did anyone tell you you will also need at least one good lens to go with that camera, and that the lens is often more expensive than the camera itself?

Of course, you could use the kit lens and produce washed-out looking images... Similar with what your phone produces.

Photography isn't cheap.... I learned that the hard way. Wish someone had told me that around 15 years ago.
The 18-55 kit lens with this T7 is excellent and will serve the OP very well. It may be the STM version which is a bit improved over the EF-S II version. The poster can add the inexpensive and outstanding 55-250 for $200 new if more reach is needed.

I was referring to the 75-300, not the 70-300II which is the NanoUSM version. That is the one referred to in the Dustin Abbott link. I have never seen a 70-300 STM, maybe Canon made one long ago?
