In terms of lifetime of the camera, is better to shoot in electronic? I think every time I use the mechanical shutter there is a degradation and can be broken after 100k shots.

If the mechanical shutter breaks, can I continue using the camera only with electronic shutter and for video recording?

Hi.

I have some experience with this. If you use electronic shutter there will be several limitations: (1) The subject will be slightly distorted if you shake the camera just a bit, especially with longer lenses. Because the sensor readout speed is about 1/20 seconds. (2) If the subject is moving it there will be a huge distortion (i.e. rolling shutter) (3) In artificially lit environments, you will see banding unless you set your shutter speed multiples of 1/60 in North America, or 1/50 in Europe (or significantly slower like 1/30, etc.) Even then, you can see slight banding. (4) You cannot use flash.

But your camera will probably live forever until you break some of the dials, or shutter button.

How long the camera will last if you use mechanical shutter? My first M6 mark II died after about 250,000 to 300,000 shots due to mechanical shutter failure. If you use 14fps burst, and use the camera a lot, you can easily shoot 100,000 per year. It depends on the luck a bit and maybe accumulated dust on the shutter curtain. After getting  the second M6 Mark II, I stopped using the mechanical shutter (except for rare cases when I need to use flash). I am planning to buy a new camera soon and it will be my second body. Otherwise, it is crazy to use electronic shutter exclusively unless you have something like R3, A1 or Z9.

No, unfortunately you cannot use the camera if the mechanical shutter fails. It will not turn on, and give you an error on the screen.

But despite the limited lifespan, please just enjoy your camera and stop worrying. Everything dies one day.
