I used the 55 Micro Nikkor f2.8 for artwork and design documentation.  It was very sharp and flat focusing.

The tricky part of documenting paintings is capturing the texture of the paint (and other materials) yet still evenly illuminating the surface.  Can be quite challenging, especially if the work is glossy and large in size.  Typical 45° copy lighting will not emphasize textural qualities.
