I think/hope Canon will consolidate and update the RP/R. IBIS, new AF, legitimate 5 FPS, full width 4K24P, $1500 launch price.

The R isn't really sure for replacement for another year, the RP possibly not for at least two years, going by the models whose sensors and market position they share. I think the R and the RP are aimed at different users and consolidating then into one model will lose some of them. A $1500 launch price seems too cheap to do the hardware for IBIS, legitimate 5 FPS, full width 4K24, etc. properly. We can all dream, but unrealistic expectations don't help.

My guess is that the main reason EOS R is still being made--in spite of not selling that well--is because Canon has to continue making 5D4 for the foreseeable future, because they have to supply replacement units to a number of pros who still use them as workhorses. That implies that the sensor fab line has to stay running, so they might as sell the sensor for the RF mount as well.

If my speculation is correct, we are unlikely to see EOS R retired for several more years, and when it does go, there is a good chance it will have no replacement at all, as its product concept was always "what MILC can we build using our existing DSLR assets?" rather than "what would best fit the needs of this customer segment?".

As a corollary, I suspect that the main reason 6D2 hasn't been discontinued yet--in spite of being an introductory-class body for a mount to which Canon no longer wants to introduce anybody--is because EOS RP is doing well enough that new sensors continue to be made. That would imply that EOS RP would get replaced (and 6D2 retired) if and only if Canon loses confidence in RP's ability to control the low end of the market. As Sony and Nikon currently do not seem very interested in lighting a fire under RP's butt, it's anybody's guess when that is going to happen.
