Does the R become the R8?
Does the RP becomes the R9?
Now that they're fleshing out the lineup with the numbered R cameras, they can just retire the R. The R was the $2kish full frame competitor to the a7iii and Z6. The R6 is now doing that role.
How can a 20MP camera replace a 30MP camera? That's not how Canon does things.
You can say the R6 has effectively replaced the R.
How? It's more expensive. Lower resolution. It was released 2 years after the R, which Canon also never does.
They will update the R6 (as with the R5). So the question then is how will Canon update their $2kish camera to compete against Sony's $2kish a7iv.
Why not? The same way Sony updated a 24MP camera into a 33MP camera.
They updated the a7iii's $2k to the a7iv's $2.5k.
I know you said that's not Canon does things. But I look at price points and how most companies won't have same categories of product in similar price brackets. That's why I say they will update the R6. There will be another full frame camera in the $2k price bracket. So I don't want to restrict myself and say "is it an R or R6", I just want to ask how will Canon update their $2kish full frame camera. It may or may not look like the R or R6, but there will be a camera occupying that spot.
And next if we lay things up together with the other companies, while we may not get identical cameras, but they each have a role in the lineup that are not too dissimilar from each other.
The RP, Z5 and a7c are the sub $2k full frames.
The Z6, R6, a7iv are the $2k range full frames that are general purpose cameras with L ess resolution than the next tier cameras.
The Z7, R5, a7iv are the $3k range full frames for people who want resolution.
The R3 and a9 are high end lower resolution full frames than the next tier of cameras.
The a1 and Z9 are high end higher resolution flagship full frames.
Do we expect the R1 to compete against the a1 and Z9? Absolutely. Will they be clearly identical? Not likely.
To answer the original question. The R was a full frame camera occupying the $2k price range. The R6 is the full frame camera to take over the R in that same price range. How will Canon make the next $2k price range full frame camera?
