Canon is starting to run out of ranking numbers.

R3, R5, R6, R7, R10

Does the R become the R8?

Does the RP becomes the R9?

Now that they're fleshing out the lineup with the numbered R cameras, they can just retire the R. The R was the $2kish full frame competitor to the a7iii and Z6. The R6 is now doing that role.

How can a 20MP camera replace a 30MP camera?  That's not how Canon does things.

You can say the R6 has effectively replaced the R.

How?  It's more expensive.  Lower resolution.  It was released 2 years after the R, which Canon also never does.

They will update the R6 (as with the R5). So the question then is how will Canon update their $2kish camera to compete against Sony's $2kish a7iv.
