I won't be shocked if this happens. As time passes it seems Canon is following much of the same strategy in the R system as they did in the EF system. EOS 6D debuted 2012 at about the same price as 7D did in 2009, and when 7D mark II came out in 2014, its launch price was about $100 higher than 6D's. So your premise is incorrect.
