I got the Canon EOS Rebel T7. I needed a camera for my photography course and I wanted something affordable. I heard about the T7 on Tiktok but I browsed even cheaper options because I'm a real cheapskate. I heard that Nikon and Canon are hands down the best brands and I decided on this camera because it's the most popular affordable DSLR camera. Hope I made a good choice. Someone I know said Nikon is better than Canon. What do you guys think? I'm just excited for my new camera to arrive so I can test it out :)

Congratulations. I hope you enjoy your new camera. One of the main shortcomings that the Canon T7 has, is that it does not have in-camera sensor cleaning. So if the sensor gets dirty, you'll have to learn how to clean it properly (you might find that on YouTube). If you are careful of where and when you change lenses, that could reduce sensor dust some too. The Canon T7i (800D) camera (the one that I am using) does have in-camera sensor cleaning, but it's more expensive.

I don't have experience with using Nikon DSLR cameras. I have used Olympus and Canon DSLR cameras and I liked the colors that I received from both. They were pretty much the same from some tests that I made a very long time ago (over 10 years ago). For the Canon DSLR cameras that I have used, I have found the out-of-the-camera JPEGs to be excellent. I don't shoot RAW.

Welcome to the club! What lens did you get with it?

Ameliaz,

Congratulations.

Buy yourself a spare battery. You will need it.

A youtuber I watched said that what makes the brand Canon stand out are it's colors, which compelled me to get one. It's nice to know that Olympus is a good brand in case I get a new camera in the future. I also heard that you would generally use JPEG instead of RAW though I don't know much about that stuff. Thx for your reply.

Thanks! That's a helpful tip. I didn't know about in-camera sensor cleaning. I have a lot to learn about photography.

Thanks, I'm happy to be here! Since I've started photography I've mainly used an old hand me down Canon Rebel camera, but it stopped working several months ago. I'm excited to have something that's better in quality. I just purchased the camera as it was, with no additional lens. It comes with the standard 18-55mm lens. I figured I might buy a better lens if I feel the need to. Photography is just hobby for me anyway.

Would you suggest I get a canon brand battery or do you think an off brand would be alright? The camera comes with a battery and charger, but a few reviews said the charger wasn't good. A lot of the batteries on amazon come with two of them and a charger.

Did anyone tell you you will also need at least one good lens to go with that camera, and that the lens is often more expensive than the camera itself?

Of course, you could use the kit lens and produce washed-out looking images... Similar with what your phone produces.

Photography isn't cheap.... I learned that the hard way. Wish someone had told me that around 15 years ago.

I've heard that the lens is often more expensive. My standards for a camera aren't very high since it's just a hobby and I've only used old cameras. I figured I'd get a new lens later if/when I get more serious with photography. I at least wanted to wait until my camera arrives to see what it's like. I didn't realize how expensive photography was until I started browsing cameras. Found out that even $700 cameras are considered on the affordable end. Thanks for the heads up.

Amelia,

I personally would stick with the name brand from Canon.

If you haven't done so yet, you might also want to download the User Manual.

You can find a copy here in pdf format:

https://www.camerauserguide.net/can...anual-instruction-manual-user-guide-pdf/30752

It will have all the specs for your camera like what batteries and which chargers to use, etc

I have found that the search tool in Adobe Acrobat to search inside pdf's to be invaluable.

Thank you for attaching the manual! I'm sure it will come in handy, and I'll be able to search for things in the guide with my bestie ctrl-F.

I bought a Sigma 18-200 mm lens years ago. However, don’t expect birds in flight with a slower lens but it’s a good all around lens. I’m sure you can find plenty of these used. Digirame has an affordable 600 mm lens I think. Not sure about the specs.

If you want an inexpensive telephoto zoom lens look for a Canon 55-250mm lens. I used that for a very long time before I got my Tamron 150-600mm lens. But I still use the Canon 55-250mm lens if I don't need more than 250mm FL and because it's very lightweight.

Mocha and I use the Tamron 150-600mm G1 lens often. The cost is around $1000 (USD) depending on whether it is new or used etc.

Dig,

I was going to recommend the 55-250 as well.

I'm very happy with mine.

The Canon Rebel series cameras give a good "bang for the buck" A good quality lens or two will go a long way towards good photos.

Congratulations,

I would suggest finding/joining your local camera or photography club. There you will find people with more experience and can offer help and answer questions. You might have questions about software for processing your pictures or learning different techniques. It's also a good place to meet people who are passionate about photography, have outings and maybe guest speakers or presentations. Enjoy yourself. Buying a camera is just the beginning.
