I think soft corners only matter if there are several models in the portrait and some of them are near one or more corners, but even then, such a group picture would necessitate F4 or f5.6 or f8 or even f11 which would mitigate soft corners to a convincing degree.

Add to that those that would whine "oh but it has CA or LOCA" and such in the end any competent program like Canon's own or the likes of DXO will immediately remove that as well as any potential vignetting and more.

That's not a free lunch imo.

So it's easy to discount a lenses performance based on "the old days" when it either worked of didn't. These days the software alone will compensate very nicely.
