FYI - The original battery tabs were spot-welded on; possibly by Yaesu.

Did your battery replacement solve the problem? I thought those batteries were only used to keep the clock running and retain the memories while the radio is un-powered...

Those lithium metal batteries have a 10-12 year shelf life, so the thicker CR2032 will likely not get you anything beyond what a CR2016 would have with half its capacity.

That CR20xx family is a very popular one for coin lithium metal cells. I have rifle scopes with lit reticles that use them, keyless entry car remotes, and even the Casio watches with advertised 10 year battery life use the thinner ones.
