What does P mode have to do with anything? Is P mode on the R5 somehow 'better' than P mode on the R6, R, RP, or even the 5DIII?

Technically, image shot by R5 in P mode is way better than R, RP and 5D3

Of all the things that play a part in producing a good quality photographic image, the camera body ranks #3 behind skill and optics.

Agree that skill is usually more important the camera body. However optics is not always more important than body. I just shot an air show during Memorial day. An old camera body even with the best lens and good skill got no chance in having more keepers compare to a R5 with a consumer grade lens

Buying a 50/1.2L instead of a 50/1.8 is not going to suddenly turn you into Ansel Adams.

Agree. However, buying an expensive L lens do give me extra incentive to make the best use of it. (so that my hard earn money is not wasted)

Hopefully, such incentive in long run can help me become a better photographer
