I only have the 85, not the 100. The 85 is, and would be, my choice for portraits. I would guess a macro lens would be too sharp - good for other things but not always good for flattering portraits.

A lens cannot be too sharp...this thinking is a fallacy.

The Canon EF 100L f2.8 macro is a better portrait lens than the EF 85 f1.8 because the 85 is way too soft wide open.
