Seen a couple of threads saying we want this or that function from the R7 added to the R6/5 in the next firmware. Those discussions usually come down to a lot of ‘no Canon won’t do that’. But I have a different question…

What new functions from the newer cameras (R3,R10,R7) are even possible to be added to the R6 or R5?

Who knows? But it sounds like the main R7 feature that picks up some functionality from the R3 is AF. The R5 has already had a couple of AF upgrades in firmware, so perhaps another is possible. Without knowing how much of that would depend on the hardware details of the sensors in the newer cameras it is hard to say, and Canon does not document all of those internal details.

There are features like modifying the way the autofocus works to match the R3 and R7 most closely.   IMO that may be doable on the R5 and R6 but maybe not.  It all depends on details like the amount of memory required.  Maybe it is request that is a lot ask of Canon if that is the case.

Another class of changes is getting rid to the 29:59 timer for video.    It serves no apparent necessary purpose  and get rid of it should be readily possible and fairly simple in my opinion.

Only time will tell whether the timer is eliminated in future firmware updates but it would please lots of loyal Canon customers.
