Focus point moves away from the one set when back button focus pressed.

I have my XT3 set up for back button focussing and I am finding that some strange behaviour occurs intermittently.  I wonder whether this is camera realted or lens related.

Yesterday when using my 100-400 lens  the following happened.  I centred the focus point by pressing the backbutton and then pressed the AFL buuton which is set to focus.  Immediately I did this the focus point jumped to a position at the bottom of the screen whiich meant that I missed the shot.

It happened repeatedly.  However trying to replicate this with a different lens, the camera behaved as i think it should ie the focus point remains where I put it.
