Rolling shutter question

Since I don't do much action photography, this doesn't come up for me much, but still a bit puzzled.
Frequently I read that mechanical shutters are not subject to rolling shutter. Now, digging back into my younger days and first SLR (Topcon D1) focal plane shutters were always considered to have rolling shutter issues: except at slow shutter speeds, there was a distinct time differential between top-to-bottom (or sid-to-side). Back then, only leaf shutters were considered free of distortion.
Now I frequently read claims that mechanical shutters avoid 'rolling shutter'. What am I missing?
