Is there a maximum useful resolution for monochrome images?

I have recently been told that 42 mpx is considered the maximum useful resolution for monochrome captures...that using a camera with more mpxs does not enhance the resulting sharpness, acuteness, dynamic range etc.

Does this idea have a firm basis in photographic engineering/theory?
