Sony 100-400 handling tips?

Hiya, I just picked up the 100-400 mint used, and really looking forward to putting it through its paces. Mostly purchased for action, specifically surfing, where I shoot from shore or nearby cliffs. Combining it with the A9ii I'm feeling lucky!

Any tips for handling this lens? I've not used a super zoom of this size before. Closest I've had was the Fuji 70-300, a much smaller and lighter affair to be sure.

Do shooters who use this lens tend to use a monopod? Hold it in your hands? I don't have a monopod at this point, and I'm quite used to handheld, so that's my preference. Do you hit limits of the lens with this approach in certain situations?

None of this is a big deal, I'll figure it out, but if any experienced folks have tips I'm excited to hear 'em! Thanks.
