That lens-camera combo is fantastic, even with a 1.4x extender. I recommend you get closer to fill more of the frame with your subject, and in a sunlit situation like this, I would overexpose a bit to ensure the dark parts of the bird aren't in deep shadow.

This example is at maximum magnification and with the 1.4x extender, taken at much higher ISO. (And, in case it is not obvious, the extender can only detract from the image quality of the lens without extender.) I did go a bit too far with the overexposure.

And, this was taken using electronic shutter, which sacrifices two bits of dynamic range (12-bit vs. 14-bit for the other shutter modes).
