For me, not having an optional battery grip is a deal breaker and I was really hoping that this would be my reason to finally ditch my last Canon DSLR, the 7D MkII/.

I shoot a lot of sports and wildlife, my wife and I go to Africa (pre-covid) just about every other year. I shoot with long lenses and am often away from a means to recharge batteries. Of course I carry extras but the ability to have 2 within the camera is important to me and a battery grip is more ergonomic and balanced in my opinion. I own the R as well as a couple of M5 bodies I use for everyday shots and travel that doesn't involve the need for a fast burst rate that the 7D MkII gives me. I will probably just go ahead and get the R5 but was hoping that the lower priced R7 would be an option.

I know it is not ideal, but it would work with a usb-c battery bank.

Maybe Canon will have a grip in the future, who can tell.
