Front dial and index finger position

I am coming from a Pentax K10D where the front dial is forward of the shutter button. In this position I am able to use my index finger on the shutter and my middle finger on the front dial. So, I don't have to move my index finger to make an adjustment.

I was able to use a Canon R6 and the front dial is behind the shutter button. Do people leave their index finger on the front dial and use their middle finger on the shutter button? Or do you move your index finger back and forth?

I was going to try out a Nikon camera next since it seems like that arrangement of shutter and front dial is like the Pentax.

Do you just learn to move your finger or have I learned a bad habit?
