Tourist Photographers in Barcelona and FNAC
3

I was in Barcelona last week for Unesco‚Äôs World Higher Ed Conferene, to make a presentation about my university affirmative action programs.  Two remarks about photography these days.

First, very low numbers of people with ILCs, compared to just a few years ago, in the tourist areas. Around the Sagrada Familia, maybe 1-2/100 ratio, almost everyone with smartphones. I think back 10 years ago that would have been 5-10/100. I didn’t have time for photography, didn’t bring my cameras. But would have, if there was no alternative like a smartphone.

I also visited FNAC’s major store and checked the photography section. Overall smaller than such areas from some years ago, Sony dominated the space, with Canon second and Nikon with a small display, about same as Fuji. That’s also a big difference from years past, Canon/Nikon would have been the space leaders. Maybe Z9 and the updates will help change that, or maybe ILCs will just keep losing space in larger stores. No more the long stands full of compacts. And nobody even lokking at cameras and the store was very busy overall, heart of shopping area near Passeig de Gracia.
