Does exporting an edited jpeg w/o saving reduce it's quality?

I tend to shoot RAW, but there's some older photos I have and some times when I forgot to switch back to RAW where I'm left with jpegs I'd like to do whatever work I can on them.

I've read how every time a jpeg is edited and saved it's quality is reduced due to compression of the file. I've also read that's not the case, or that it doesn't have that noticeable an effect.

That said; if I open a jpeg in PS, make some edits, export an edited version, and then close the file without saving it, will that have any effect on the quality of the original jpeg?

I would think it wouldn't if it isn't being saved, but thought I'd ask for confirmation.
