I've been looking something a bit longer than my 70-200 f4. At the moment i've narrowed down the a Tamron 100-400 VC and the RF 100-400. I really like the RF lens but wondering would the slower aperture be a big issue. I would use the lens for some sports/ family and general photography. The other consideration is i have a kenko 1.4 extender which would work with the Tamron but not the Canon.

Been mulling over the decision for a few months now. Any thoughts or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

I have the R6 and have the RF 100-400 lens as well as the Canon RF 1.4x TC.  Also, I did have the EF 100-400L IS II, which works great adapted to the R6, but it was very heavy.  The RF 100-400 is a great lens, and with the R6, I don't have to worry about the slower aperture.  Even with the TC, which takes it to f11 at 400mm, it performs very well.

I've only had this combo for a few months and I shoot mainly wildlife.  I leave for my annual Yellowstone trip in 2 weeks and can't wait to use it there.  Here's a few samples with the RF 100-400.  The hawk pictures were taken right after a storm and the lighting was horrible.
