OM-1 Long Exposure Noise
6

The new Sony 20 MP sensor used in the OM-1 has slightly lower long exposure noise than the older Sony 20 MP sensor used in the E-M1 2/3/X. For both sensors the noise levels are higher with long exposure noise reduction (dark frame subtraction) enabled, for exposures up to at least 60 seconds. When two frames are subtracted the random electronic noise adds in quadrature (Increases by square root of 2), while the fixed pattern noise subtracts linearly. Neither Sony sensor has much fixed pattern noise, so dark frame subtraction does not help.  For the 16 MP Panasonic sensor used in the E-M1 Mk I, dark frame subtraction produces a big improvement.
