Re: Different target user groups & different phase in the product life cycles.

I think the 2 systems cater to 2 different ‘groups’ of users. ( and below M you even have a #3 system catering again to a different group.) You always have overlap and sub groups within groups. It’s called market segmentation.

I have a very high confidence in Canon’s marketing and R&D departments, and can not believe they made mistakes. They are masters in segmentation and understanding technological opportunities !

As with all systems, you have consumer and technology advances, that over time drive change.

Keep in mind the M was launched in 2012, the RF in 2018, both are still selling millions of cameras / year! The EOS in 1987, with digital eos in 2005.
All typical product life cycles, indicating M could be around for another 3-8 years !

As far as Canon's main focus is concerned,
Film SLR : 1987-2005, 18 years
Digital SLR: 2005-2018, 13 years
and EF M bodies: 2012-2020? 8 years?
No bad in that it is APS-C system. If Canon just releases a couple of EFM bodies for another three years, its lifespan will become the same as Canon DSLR!
