Have I Been Too Dismissive of Crop Bodies?

I own two R5 bodies at present. Birds are about my only real interest for a "real" camera as opposed to a smart phone.

Prior to owning the EOS R (since sold) I have used crop bodies. (D60, 20D, 40D)

Always thought the argument that crop bodies somehow allowed longer reach was a bit phony. Actually totally phony!

Now I'm not so sure. Have played a bit with crop mode on the R5 and the RF800 f/11 STM. I understand the R5 puts about 17MP on a 1.6 crop. Not sure if that puts me any further ahead than just cropping FF in post, which is what I've been doing. Not concerned about file sizes so much or computer processing time.

But, if the purported R7 actually puts 32MP in an APS-C size sensor, it may be preferable for birding.

Assuming the R7 will be "bargain-priced," vis a vis the R5, it may actually be a better choice for birding than its high-priced older sibling?
